A tap into my archives and a change of pace with some color. A bit of green is appropriate for the beginning of spring and a wee bit late for St. Patrick’s Day.
I made this whimsical image a few years ago while looking for interesting subjects in my back yard. The image was scanned from a color transparency.
I like the colors, textures and the composition. Making the image was fun. I see things but I won’t give anything away. Enjoy.
Be sure to visit Lisa’s Chaos for more Macro Monday photos. Thank you Lisa. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to share.

ohh! I quite like this one, love the colors too. Is there a four leaf in there somewhere? I like the roots sticking up. I agree, nice composition!
I love the varied shades of green in this. Wonderful Spring image.
Lovely photo of beautiful green!
A four leaf clover was what I looked for first but I didn’t see one.
The little root coming up in the front reminds me of a character from ‘Where The Wild Things Are’.
I see a tortoise: the shell is the knob with the clover leaves above it, and the head is toward the lower right corner. There is a covering of moss on its neck.
Nice shot!
I didn’t see the tortoise until you pointed it out dimple. Glad you like the shot. Carletta saw what I think I saw and that’s the little creature in the foreground.
The one root or knob looks like it has a face to it as well. I do like all the different textures here John.
And arms too Amanda. I’ve always liked this image. I’ve been saving it for some reason. Guess today was a good reason. I do like to inject color every now and then. I have a couple rolls of Kodak Ektar color film that I’m planning on using very soon. I’m thinking about taking two cameras with me next time I visit Ceres, one with B&W and one loaded with Ektar.
Oh, goodness, the different shades of green, seldom you can see all together in one photo!
The mossy green embedded on the root (rock?) is just amazing!
Keep them coming John!
Looks like shamrock to me, but I know so little! I am amazed at how green and lush the photo is. Can’t wait till that is seen here!
I think that would be nice framed on your wall. So much to look at there.
You got that on slide film? I’m impressed! Quite!
Most of my macro work has been on slide film. I prefer Fuji pro emulsions. I have a couple of rolls in the fridge now. Just bought two rolls of Kodak Ektar color print film as an alternative. Now that I have VueScan, color negative scanning just works.
But color is way too expensive and a pain to get it processed. I’m committed to B&W photography because I love the medium and have complete control over the process. It’s cheap too. Freestyle Photographic in CA sells a lot of 35mm B&W film under their own brand name for cheap. I just discovered that one of their offerings is really Tri-X and the price is a mere $2.19 for a 36x roll. They just introduced a new line from Japan that turns out to be Fuji. I can buy Fuji Acros for $1.99 for a 36X roll.
Since they also have the best prices in the country for Diafine, the developer I use, it’s no contest. I will need a new supply of developer and fixer within the next few months. Meanwhile, I have three rolls of Acros that I’ll be testing to see how well it works for me. I’ve only ever shot one roll of the stuff before.
Tri-X is a no brainer for me. I shoot it at 1600 and it comes out beautifully with Diafine like they are made for each other. It’s a great available light film.
Acros is a new technology film, Fuji’s version of Tmax or Delta with the high tech silver crystals. My first roll of this stuff was interesting but not a good test because I used it indoors with bounce flash (yuck).
So, I will continue to shoot film, especially since my cost per roll (film and developing) will be going down from just under $5/roll to just under $3/roll.
I’ve been using Ilford FP4+, a nice film but it costs over $5/roll now. I bought a couple dozen rolls a few years ago when I got a great deal at B&H. It’s expired now but has been in the fridge since the day it arrived and is perfectly fine. Only 9 rolls (24X left) so I need to find a medium speed replacement. FP4+ is 250 in Diafine and Acros is 200 — just 1/3 stop so no big deal.
I’m having so much fun hiking and shooting in the local nature preserve. B&W is great. But…I do want to shoot some color closeups to mix things up a bit.

How pretty that is! Love the brilliant greens!
The green is so brilliant, and I love the textures of the ground foliage and litter. Perhaps there is a little leprechaun hiding somewhere or a fairy kingdom nestled in the leaves
A whimsical kind of shot! I am expecting to see the fairy king peeking from behind the rocks or from under the clover. really like this!
