I love the light of evening. It’s such a wonderful time for B&W photography. I was out on my bicycle again and stopped at the small bridge over one of the creeks to have a look at the light.
I found this image waiting for me. It’s from the same roll of film (Ilford FP4+) as the old barn and silo photos from two weeks ago. I don’t remember if it was the same evening though. I should take better notes.
Drop on by The Weekend in Black and White, especially if you are a monochrome maniac. There’s lots links to some great monochrome photography. And some of the monochrome maniacs still use film like I do.

Hi John,
This is lovely, the light is perfect. I love evening, too. It’s not only good for b&w, it is also good for color!
Mine is here.
Sorry, mine isn’t there…something went wrong somewhere!

That one should work…I hope!
The shot has come out well, the light on the side of the trees makes it.
Re. waiting for film to come back, I guess that’s part of the whole ‘film thing’, you don’t really know what you’ve got till it gets back. I’m sure there are professionals who would say that if you don’t know what you’ve got you haven’t done it right, usually I’m not sure till I see them.
I imagine the trunk to be very smooth and you can’t climb the tree without the branches.
Are you experimenting with B & W?
John, I really like this. Such beautiful light on the leaves and the trunks.
I use film at times
I love this shot
black and white lets you see the shapes and textures
John, I truly love the light in this shot! Great work!
Have a great weekend
Beautiful shot indeed. I went joging in the forest this evening, whitout the camera naturally, and the light was really special. Like yours.
A beautiful photo – almost ethereal in composition. I like that you still use film. I do that too sometimes. There’s nothing quite like waiting for your photos to be developed and to see how they turn out.

Love it! It´s perfect light in this photo, and greata perspectiv. Have a nice day.
I love how you have captured this time of day. Very relaxing to look at.
Hi again John-
Thought I’d follow up on your comment about the filtering on my lily. I use Picassa to do most of my editing these days, and I like it a lot. There is an option for filtered b&w conversions which allows many choices: there are maybe 8 single color filters, and also a graph which goes through a sliding scale, so to speak. I generally try several before I decide which one I like when doing a conversion. I did try red on the lily, but it made the petals too white for my taste. The blue was the one which best preserved the tonal variation present in the pink. I didn’t think about the contrast on this one, I’ll have to go back to check.
It’s funny, I never used to appreciate b&w, but since I’ve been playing with it and looking at other’s work, I like it more. But I don’t think I’ll stop using color, especially since digital makes changing things around so easy!
I appreciate your comments and suggestions!

That is wonderful light and very well shot too.
I love this.
Well I love trees, but the light falls at every right spot.
Well seen.
Lovely! My favourite time is the evening light.

Lookin’ good John. I think you’ll like my new post. Thought it is yet another digital, it’s more than a little inspired by your own forresty photos.
congratulations, John! Your B&W is being featured at the B&W main page. Good job! Lovely work!
