One day, a few weeks ago, I was walking along the main trail in Ceres park playing the let’s be quiet game. Instead of crashing and lumbering about, I was walking softly, seeing and listening.
How about this. I spotted this turtle sitting on a log in Emerald Lake. I happened to have two cameras that day and one was loaded with Kodak Ektar color print film. What I didn’t have was a long enough lens. I shot this with my 85mm.
Then I did hear voices up ahead. Turns out it was this old grizzled guy on a bicycle. He must have been talking to himself. He was pointing to the lake. He wanted to show me the turtle family. I got as close as I could and took this picture.
When I came back the next week, I brought my 75-150 zoom along. I found the turtles out sunning themselves again and zoomed in a bit for a tighter shot.
Here, I zoomed all the way to 150 and turned the camera for a portrait shot. I think this is my favorite of the bunch. I had to shoot wide open f/3.5 because my film was ISO 100 and I needed a high shutter speed. What I really needed was my tripod. One of these days, I’ll lug it to the park.
Got this image on the way back. Same log but I saw this little guy way at the other end.
I zoomed out enough to frame the entire scene so I could catch the other two turtles.
I went back yesterday but didn’t see a single turtle. Maybe I was too early or something. I heard a few splashes and saw the ripples but never did catch a glimpse of the critters. I suspect frogs this time.
I had two cameras again yesterday. This time my F3 was loaded with Fuji Provia, a color transparency film. I only shot 10 frames. Maybe I’ll finish the roll next week when I go back again. I had my other Nikon loaded with B&W but only took one picture with it. It was kind of hot and I wasn’t in the mood I suppose.
Ektar is interesting film. Some people say it’s too blue, but I can’t tell yet. Color scanning is a royal pain. I don’t have a color calibrated monitor so getting things exact is hard and scanning color negatives is (or can be) a challenge. VueScan makes it much easier though.
I’ll be shooting more color during the spring and summer months. I found some neat ferns yesterday and took a few pics of them up close. Need my tripod for critical work though. Maybe next time?
