About

Hi, I’m John McDevitt (my friends call me John or McD) and It’s about time for an update to this page.

John

I started The Aware Writer to scratch an itch and focus some of my energies on writing and writers. Why do we write? How can we help each other? Where can we publish? How do we get paid without being exploited? Which tools I’ve found helpful and which are more trouble than they are worth?

Somewhere along the way, I’ve rekindled my love of photography. I began adding photos as a compliment to my writing. I’m doing exactly the reverse — now I choose my photos and add my words. I like the synergy of photography and writing.

Life is a creative journey. My creative journey began many years ago with my love of books and reading — I can’t get enough. I spent nearly 30 years as an architect before retiring in 2005. I love photography, especially black and white and I’m a pretty decent photographer. I always wanted to write and have been writing full time since 2005. Turns out I’m a good one. My blog gives me the opportunity to feed both of my passions.

I’ve learned much and have much to learn. I want to share, to teach and to learn from my friends. Every person ever born is a creative being. Some find their niche early, some (sadly) never do. Most people just need encouragement, guidance and a helping hand.
