I’m stalling I know, changing my pen for the third time, but now I’m ready to tell my tale. I’m still not sure how the stranger and I met up that day in the park — no, that’s not true, he called me over to the bench where he sat. It was as though I had no choice, that my body had given over control to the stranger.

Name him? I think not. Even though I know his name (or think I do) I dare not say it aloud lest he “notice” me again.

That first meeting in the park changed my life forever (or so long as I live which might be a very long time). The stranger seemed like a normal person. He sat on a park bench, dressed well with a newspaper folded on his lap.

It was as though I had crossed a threshold and entered a new world. I had been standing in my room, door closed wondering what I should do. I was afraid to go out because I had suckered one of my neighbors out of 100 bucks for a famous book with the author’s autograph. The book was a cheap reproduction and the autograph fake. I thought my customer might have found out about the fake. He’s a lot bigger and meaner.

But allow me to get back to the point I’ve been avoiding. I knew I was in for an interesting afternoon when I opened the door to my rented room during a January snowstorm and stepped directly into a park on a sunny spring afternoon. I turned around — no door. it was gone. I saw the stranger when I turned again. He beckoned to me. I walked over to the bench where he sat. He nodded to the bench next to him. I swear I heard him say “Please sit down,” but his lips never moved. I obeyed.

He reached under the newspaper he had folded on his lap and removed a package wrapped neatly in brown paper. He smiled and handed the package to me. I knew. It was the book. I was sure.

“I just gave you the real thing Robert. This is an original copy made centuries before you were born. This book is the only real copy left in the world and you my boy, are about to embark on the adventure of your life.”

I just stared at him, unable to speak, afraid to move. I sat waiting.

“Selling that fake wasn’t nice Robert, especially to an old friend of mine. It’s your job to make this right. All you have to do is get the author to authenticate this copy with his signature.”

“But the author is dead. How will I…?”

“I know Robert, I know.”

“Give up the purse lady.”

“What? You talking to me young man?”

“The purse old woman, give me your purse.”

“Me give you my purse? I’ve a mind to give you my cane, up your skinny little ass.”

He looked at her, eyes wide in surprise. Surprise turned to fright when the old lady raised her cane. He ran muttering to himself: “That crazy old lady is out of her mind.”

“Heard you was the greatest engineer in the world. That true?”

“Damn right it’s true. And here comes Sim, the best fireman an engineer could ask for.”

The conductor looked at his watch “We’re more than an hour and a half behind schedule now.”

Don’t you worry Mr. Turner, we have a light train and a good crew. We’ll make up the time.

“Come on up Sim, let’s get this beast fired and on the road.”

Sim grabbed his shovel, opened the fire door and began shoveling like a madman. “Let her rip Mr. Casey, this loco wants to run.”

“You actually think I love you? You’re delusional. I married you for your money and you, my misguided husband, are stuck with me for life. And no, I will not grant you a divorce.”

“You haven’t met my divorce lawyer yet” he said as he chambered a round and placed the Glock G30s on the table in front of him.

Michael broke the silence when he leaned forward from the back seat waving a wad of cash. “I’ll buy your car. We’ll take you where you want to go. How much?”

“My car isn’t for sale. I’m going back to the city to find someone who needs my help.”

Beth turned so she could see her husband: “You disgust me Michael. You think money can buy anything. It can’t.”

“Leah, is there anything we can do to help? Michael is on the Mayor’s staff.”

Leah jammed on the brakes and said between clenched teeth: “Get out. You’re one of them, one of the bastards who chose us. Sarah and I were separated. I escaped but she was left behind. I’m going to find her and get her out of the city.”

Beth looked at Leah in horror and turned to Michael. “What is Leah talking about? What have you done?”

He didn’t look up when I entered his office. He sat there behind the largest desk I had ever seen. He knew I was there, standing, waiting, wondering but he continued reading the letter in his hand as though I didn’t exist. After what seemed an eternity, he put the letter down, squared it up neatly and looked up at me with a gaze that pinned me to the wall. I couldn’t speak. He didn’t care. I asked for the interview. I needed a favor and was afraid to ask and afraid not to.

He folded his hands together on the desk and spoke softly: “Why have you come here?”

He glanced at the heavy gold watch on his wrist: “I’m a busy man. You have exactly 60 seconds.”

Time was nearly up when I blurted it out. He nodded: “You will know soon. Now leave me”
